I told my Daddy that I cant stay here no more
Ive got to go away and fight a distant war
He told me Son you know, youve got to do whats right
Thats why I camp beneath these foreign stars tonight

The winds of winter blow across the darkened plain
I hear my daddys voice come drifting by again
Come back to your family and the town where you were born
I turn my collar up and wait the rising morn

Up and down the forward line are twenty men like me
Each one waiting for the hour of death or victory
Beside each shivering lad, a ghost from yesteryear
Shimmers in his uniform and whispers Dont stay here

The signal stands and Ive got to cross that ground
Bullets spit at Kevlar hearts, red mist smothers sound

Daddy tell my waiting mates Ill soldier here no more
Ive just joined the regiment that never goes to war

I told my Daddy that I cant stay here no more
Ive got to go away and fight a distant war
He told me Son you know youve got to do whats right
Thats why I lay beneath these foreign stars tonight
