I think the reason it was never mentioned later on is because of how bizarre the idea was. I think Vanessa clung to Ed simply because he's a doctor and she was spoiled and felt she needed to be with someone of high social standing? It's hard to tell...Vanessa later became an item with Alan before Billy came to town...then afterwards, Alan brought Reva to town to keep Billy and Vanessa separated. Alan was a much more realistic boyfriend than Ed, of course.
Ed and Vanessa= oil and water.

It's just so weird to imagine Ed dating Vanessa. And this was never mentioned later on, at least not when I was watching.

Ed got fed up with Vanessa's values and he called off their relationship...and I believe he went off to look for Rita and when he returned to town Peter Simon was playing the role instead of Martin Hulswit?
