I joined the Washington National Guard in the 1980s because I had some time left between school and university.
In this spot the word "leadership" is repeated so often that you could easely think that's just advertisment, but it is true: You really LEARN leadership and yes, it WILL help you for your civil life career, You learn to deal with other people's opinions and think about them carefully.
To become a National Guard's officer was one of the best decisions of my life!

@Niche79 The guard is a great opportunity, bonus', college benefits, travel, supporting your state and country and great training as shown here in this video. Going into the OCS program is easier than most would think so if there is a desire talk to the officer recruiter in your state and join the ranks, max age is now commission before your 42nd B-day

I was supposed to go here after my Jr year at college ROTC but the govt dropped the ball and lost my paperwork for 6 months before they notified my school, then it was one screw up after another which frustrated me to no end and withdrew from ROTC. Now I wish I woulda kept going through the hoops and stayed in, still wonder if maybe I should go in the guard though!!?? Im 30 now though but look a whoppin 22 haha!

I was Active Air Force for 4 years and at the end of my current enlistment it will be 6 years now with the Air Guard (all Security Forces). I'm seriously thinking about going Army Guard Officer here in MD. How was the transition from Air Force to Army? Its one of the things that makes me question the move. Thanks for any insight you can give.

That's really cool. I would like to be commissioned someday. Was OCS REALLY hard?

Yes, I am. I graduated from the Phase III program at Ft Lewis, came home, took my oath, and here I am. So far it's been very enjoyable and probably the best move I made in my military career.

You're commissioned now?
I was there!!!! Pretty cool stuff.

Military options are nearly endless. I started with the USAF. Didn't care for it, but I LOVE the Army (hence taking my commission). ANY branch will be fine for after military employment if you're an officer. Employers love to hire ex-officers because of their proven leadership skills. Once you commission there are so many choices. If you go into combat arms, SF is always an option. But, as I said, the opportunities are fantasic and abundant.
