Tree Swallow Slide Show
Day 27 In Memory of them
(Typo in last Text in Video -Should spell - Audubon)
My photos of the Tree Swallows including the the last photos of the female. She died overnight in her sleep
I knew of the dangers of the HOSP (House Sparrows) but I put up defenses and had a BB gun to shoot at them.
I was unsuccessful in killing the HOSP But managed to keep em away during nest building, courtship to laying of the eggs to day 8.
The Nestlings I rescued seemed fine. There may have been unseen damages. And/or a combination of something hereditary, deficiency.
3 out of 5 were rescued. One was hurting and she didn't make it. I raised the remaining 2 successfully until they showed signs of instability.
It is strange as they were fine, they were flapping their wings, preening and could balance easily on my pinkie finger even while stretching their wings.
The other box the Bluebirds came too as seen in my Eastern Bluebird Series have made no nest. I will be continuing that series
I'm donating the boxes to a local Bird Sanctuary.
If you see HOSPS, kill them scaring won't work They are an invasive and aggressive species of Sparrow and are persistent. I hate them with a passion. I did lots of research in 2 yrs. There are lots of ways to deter and defeat the HOSPS. I chose trip wire.
It was successful as the HOSP never landed on the box.
I miss them, it was fun and cute to have them. See them grow and peep for me. At least I have the videos of them.
Thank you for those who shared in watching them with me!

I'm so sorry to hear she did not make it. Her death was not in vain though, I've learned so much from watching your videos. Rest assured you did all you could for her...for all of them...and then some!

Did you ever find out what caused the illness? I saw a documentary on one of the nature channels the other day about an internal parasite and the symptoms were very similar to the ones the swallows displayed.

When I rescued them, they had no feathers and didnt see any blow flies, parasites and kept an eye on their feces. But yah never know, could be.
The Licensed Wildlife rehabilitation guy thought it was a deficiency.
Thanks for the thoughts.

This is a very sad story for me.I thought the last one would have survived...
So these house sparrows are very dangerous..I also have a big problem from grey Squirrels and starlings..They are a nuisance...They come and eat all the bird food ...
Once again I am so sad about the little birds and you are so great and kind to look after them very well and thank you so much for your kindness...

Me too my friend. It's a big bummer. I was depressed about it. But I have to move on.
If only I could get them back..I hate death, always have to be honest.
I use safflower at one feeder..squirrels don't like it. Try that. It still attracts Titmice, red finches, cardinals and chickadees.
We have starlings here too, but not that big a problem.
