In Part 9, the anti-war movement is discussed. Soldier's memoirs and novels don't show this public opposition didn't affect their war conduct. Those who were drafted to go to Vietnam were lower and working class as those that went to college like Dick Cheney got deferments and didn't have to go because he was part of a "smart" intelligent class needed for our technological base. After the war was over, Cheney who didn't risk his self in Vietnam became the biggest war mongers/hawks--with OTHER PEOPLE'S SONS/DAUGHTERS.

Gibson also talks about the technoporn of war where the mainstream media fixates on our sexy weaponry like Iowa class battleships:

While our Wiley Coyote's ACME gadgets were being fired at the VC/NVA "Roadrunner" we conned ourselves that we were winning from this firepower from a distance. After 10 years the American military was exhausted and had to stop--we WERE DEFEATED. Liberals whine "war is hell" and the Nazis claim "we should have invaded North Vietnam" yadda yadda. The truth is General Giap would have baited and ambushed an invasion with a peasant army then the NVA would have attacked. None of this would have changed the Vietnamese culture to throw out the foreign invader, just delayed them from doing it.

James William Gibson author of: The Perfect War: Technowar in Vietnam gives the most amazing and enlightening talk ever on the origins and misconduct of the Vietnam war.
