Footage begins with the laying of the foundation stone ceremony, 11 November 1960, by Ms. Gwen Swinburne, daughter of the late Hon. George Swinburne.

Footage then shows inside the finished Centre and includes mosaic mural (made by Fourth Year Diploma Art Students), new cafeteria, lecture theatre, etc.

At the time the Ethel Swinburne Centre was to be demolished, it was agreed that the student designed mosaic, as an important Swinburne cultural icon and artefact, should be preserved.

It is now currently in storage and will be reinstalled in the new Student Services Hub building in Wakefield St. This building will be completed by the beginning of 2011.

  • Nice little period piece. Love the Madeline-like sea of straw boaters on the heads of the assembled school girls, and the Tarax fridge being proudly wheeled in.

The building has now been demolished (tempus fugit!). I wonder what has happened to that mural.
