August 27, 2008 Jonathan Alter speaks about FDR and Obama at NDN's "A Better Tomorrow" conference at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, CO.
Good talk. I've always thought Obama has the inspirational qualities of FDR, and there are a lot of similarities between the '32 election and the '08 one. The last sentence in the clip is the real takeaway for me, though. Obama's no liberal idealist, I believe he's a pragmatist and a shrewd one at that. He will focus on results and not on unattainable ideological perfection. I like that quality about him, but expect a lot of grumbling from the left if he gets into the White House.
