Street Worm - Spirit [California] - 1970 - "One of their BEST. It's a great slice of street reality and helps bring the album to a fine level of realism." - Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus (Sony)-1996.

NOTE: The lyrics are a commentary on a man who is content in living on the street, and seeking any kind of romance or love. Jay Ferguson's vocals are great!

REVIEW excerpt by Richie Unterberger (allmusic):
"Although Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus has the reputation of being Spirit's most far-out album, it actually contains the most disciplined songwriting and playing of the original lineup, cutting back on some of the drifting and offering some of their more melodic tunes. The lilting "Nature's Way" was the most endearing FM standard on the album, which also included some of Spirit's best songs in "Animal Zoo" and "Mr. Skin.""

The Original lineup on their first four albums (1968-1970):
Randy California: Lead guitar, some vocals.
Jay Ferguson: Lead vocals, percussion.
Mark Andes: Bass.
Ed Cassidy: Drums.
John Locke: Keyboards.

I'll be happy flying on the rooftops
I'll be happy burning in the streets
I'll be happy moving when I wish to
I'll be happy saying how I please
But I know I was never going to hear
I know I was never going to cut my brother
I know I'll never going to make no deals

I'll be happy staying with you baby
I'll be happy swimming for free
You got ya cars at your curb, you got your horses in the country
But I'm a cities own son I'm a man of means, yes indeed
And I know I would never going to hear
I know I was never going to wear no collar
I know I'll never going to make no deal

I'm flying on the rooftops
I'm burning in the streets now
I'm a staying with you baby
I'm a swimming for free
Talk to me baby
I'm swimming for free

I can understand your enthusiasm, BUT I can see the other side.

I feel very lucky that I can post songs here at youtube for others, to pick peoples attention on what to buy.

All my Uploads and favorites have been bought by me.

  • This song was taken down from youtube, BUT I put it back up because I know that fans of Spirit especially fans of the original lineup and their seminal last album together: Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus-1970.

  • Randy's solo here is so great, that the sound of his guitar and the speed he plays it makes it sound like a sax...

  • Great song from a GREAT band!

  • File this under "cool."

  • @MarlonDeanMcQueen The Greatest 'Supergroup'' that never was. Except, of course, to us.

  • This track is like a musical jouney. It's not formulaic and the guitar playing paints so many colours within the musical theme. Although it's played at acracking pace it doesn't lose itself in pure virtuosity. You here the sound of a man struggling to maintain street credibility but also wanting to be free of the hustle. I've heard it many times but the sonic textures and liveliness don't pale.
