  • Grant is missing the point. He does play many of the same tunes for each performance, and even after hearing a few performances he can seem almost a bit "gimmicky". Still, it does not diminish the sheer virtuosity of his playing, nor does it discount his abilities as a musician. The fact that he can go out and play things like Carnival of Venice, Night in Tunisia, etc, over and over again, to packed houses and still leave even the most cynical musicians in awe, is a fact that deserves respect.

  • Woah he is amazing and can play in all types of styles, when I first saw him on ty I saw his classical and thought he couldn't play like this lol, NEVER judge a book by its cover indeed lol

  • even in this video, he's playing the jazz standards everybody plays. you may be mistaking his "quotes" as playing a written solo -- if you don't know the difference between the two, i suggest you do some more studying.

  • yah you do that and show us

  • id be better if he made up all his solos on the spot, and didnt just memorize written ones

  • just met him today at the morris jazz festival. hes awesome. made me play a few things in front of like 100 people on lead trumpet after judging us.

  • please note:

    matthew hines: piano

    matthew redman: bass

    dave elliott: drums

    also in clip:

    helen wilson: flute

    mike bryan: sax

    will shaw: trumpet

this is a short excerpt of a 40 minute set with allen, in which we played 'recordame' 'up jumped spring' 'i'll remember april' and 'night in tunisia'

  • I've heard Allen play in Washington DC and he is truly a first class trumpet player as well as a nice guy. A concert hall filled with trumpet player wannabes were dumbfounded when they heard the incredible sounds emminating from his horn at speeds that are truly phenomenal.
