The character, Katharine Plummer is her name, I'm told is based on real life female reporter Nellie Bly. It was unusual at that time in history to have female reporters but I think it works very well. There's also a surprise secret about her that's revealed in the second act. So you might be surprised as well. I certainly was.

They do well and this looks like it could be good, but it seems odd that Denton is now played by a woman. The whole point of the newsies agreeing to have Denton write about their strike was to give it some legitimacy and clout, but a female reporter probably wouldn't have been given that much respect, so it kind of defeats the purpose.
