A step by step tutorial of UV unfolding in Wings 3d. The model used in the videos can be downloaded for free from http://www.ageofarmour.com/3d/free/patrol-cap.html so you can follow along if you like.

I tried to aim this towards people who have never used Wings 3d or have limited experience with it. Wings experts will probably see a hundred things I did wrong hehe.

  • I have a question that hopefully somone will be able to answer. I was messing around with one of my models and playing with the "shader" feature. Once i was done i wanted to change the shader back to the default but have no idea how to. It does not have the default as an option in the shader slide bar. Ive uninstalled and re installed the program twice but every time i open it its still on shader 1 of 12. If anyone has any idea on how to change it so there is no shader please let me know. Thanks

  • @PsychoG4M3R Took me a second to understand... Do you mean the scene lighting/shaders like Hemispherical Lighting or Gooch Tone etc?

I too got stuck with those at first but the fix is simple; Just go to "View - One Light" and it should pop back to the default lighting.

  • Great video.

One possible workflow improvement: if you have *two* edges in an edge loop selected when you press "L", it will select the shortest part of the loop between them.

  • Excellent tip! Thank you. That's why I love Wings3d so much... the authors really put some thought into the UI and Workflow.

  • Constraints do work in the UV window. So it's possible to snap the value to 0 by using shift while moving the mouse instead of using tabbed entry. It might be a little bit faster.

Everything else really good and gets a thumbs up.

  • Also a great tip! Your right that would be faster. I'm not exactly sure why I always use tab-value but just what feels natural for me hehe.

  • Thx for the knowledge.

  • How do you know which things blend and where do I know where to split these? I need help in this one, if somebody could answer my question, I would be more than happy.

  • i suck at uv mapping cause of it i cant make textures

  • This is a great intro to UV mapping regardless of what program's being used.

  • i hate this program!!

  • At 7:16 : "selecting "L" along the UV edges doesn't work, after they've been cut ; so I have to manually select each one of them" or you can do this : select their vertices, _then_ hit "L". It might be easier sometimes to select vertices L on a selection of vertices will convert to loop(s) from all contiguous points (works in the geometry window too, for modeling), which can also take "turns", so to speak (unlike true edge loops). Another useful feature at times.

  • This video is fantastic. Amazing job.

I've been using Blender3D as the main workhorse for a 3D project I'mw orking on, but seeing how powerful and flexible Wings is... well... I might just have to switch over to it for the brunt of my modeling work (at least for static, non-animated objects).

Thanks to OBJ being such a compatible format between the two, I can easily transfer them between Blender and Wings as necessary.

    Subbed, and Thanks again!

  • How i can make different texture to speficied place in one combined model O_o?
