I remember there being a book shop that banned punks from going in 'cos they thought we were only looking for pictures of magic mushrooms! Had some great times hanging out in

If you think this looks bad have a look at Powell & Pressburger's A Canterbury Tale filmed in 1944 and get an idea of what the Longmarket rose from!

Really 1990? I'm not so sure. I was in Canterbury in 1988 and the Longmarket shops were still there but the bit in the centre was replaced with the development we now have- Cafe Rouge but then it was Our Price. I visited Canterbury in 1986 and it was still all there- I had coffee up the steps of the 'shoe box' bit. But by 1988 it has definitely gone.

It really looked hideous, but it was all the rage when new...the 'new elizabethan times' and all that junk...It was another era altogether. Still, the main building (Natwest) certainly had some architectural value and was a good quality testimony of its times, with the big blue clock (not seen in this video) being somewhat of a landmark. It should have stayed. As for the rest, I find the neo-classical buildings more suited an old town centre.

Forgot how hideous it was......good gawd> though I would of prefered something less neo-classical to replace it and to have left a better view of the Cathedral. It is so much better than this
