This video was shot last year at the Canadian Forces Small Arms Competition (CFSAC), held at the Connaught Ranges near Ottawa, Ontario. CFSAC was cancelled for 5 years to re-work the match formats and make them more 'tactical' and less 'target shooting' - oriented. The Army wants to use CFSAC as a vehicle for rebuilding a core of marksmanship within the CF.

This video is me running through one of the pistol matches. I was using a C7A1 and a Browning Hi-Power for this match. The idea is to begin the match with the primary, encounter a 'malfunction', and transition to the secondary weapon and engage the targets in sequence, using cover.

I wasn't nearly as fast as some of the more advanced shooters. I was taking my time and trying my best not to get a 'cover' penalty.

  • Cool. When are the Canadian Forces going to get a new standard sidearm? I've heard some bad stories about the old Brownings.

  • Nobody knows, really. Trials are apparently under way, but it hasn't really been publicised, as far as I know. The Navy, Air Force, JTF2, some Military Police and Close Protection units have already been issued with the Sig P225 and P226. I wouldn't be surprised if the P226 ends up replacing the Hi-Power. It's a good pistol, and since it's already in the system, it's that much easier to adopt.

  • i believe the cf already instated a new side arm as of 2009, not sure but i think its made by colt canada, they bought out diemaco a little while ago

  • Colt Canada doesn't make any pistols, to the best of my knowledge. I know Diemaco used to have some sort of arrangement with Para Ordnance, but as far as I know, none of their pistols were in the running.

  • Your primary/rifle should never fall on the same side as your secondary/pistol. Primary falls away from your secondary.

  • We did the best we could. I improvised the issue sling so it went around the delta ring, so I could get a better transition instead of the usual way. As it happened, the sling was too tight, and I couldn't push it away to the left, although I definately agree that passing to the rear through my right side isn't ideal either. The holster i was using wasn't perfect, but it was better than the issue Bianchi one, and loads better than the 84-pattern one.

  • As for your speed, or lack thereof...

    It's smarter that you did.

I've seen and timed many members who 'cowboy'ed' their way through this particular course (and others) to only incur penalties. Made them look 'foolish.'

    Good for you.

    - Al!

  • God, I miss that place.

You guys kept me up all night with exercises, night shoots and loud debauchery at the mess.

    Haha.

    - Al!

  • Very interesting. Would like more information on this in the description.
