Damon Salvatore [Ian Somerhalder]
Damon Salvatore is Stefan Salvatore's older malevolent vampire brother. He's portrayed as a charming, handsome, hot, evil being who loves tricking humans and keeps feeding on them during the entire beginning of the first season. He was turned into a vampire by Katherine Pierce, a female vampire whom he fell in love when he was human in 1864 in Mystic Falls, Virginia. He came back to release Katherine from a tomb full of vampires, only to discover she escaped and never looked for him. He uses Elena's friend Caroline to feed on, and is almost killed when Stefan poisons her blood. He kills Stefan's football coach, his oldest friend, Lexi, and their 21st century descendant, Zach. Despite his outwardly evil manner, Elena always reminds him that there is something kind in him, and she brings out his best qualities. Isobel reveals that Damon is in love with Elena, and he makes no move to confirm or deny this. It is shown several times throughout the season Damon is capable of caring for others (Rescuing Elena from a car wreck, helping Stefan escape from being tortured, and teaming up with Stefan, Bonnie, and Elena to protect Mystic Falls.)

In season two, it was revealed that Katherine never did love him, it was always Stefan. Upset, a drunken Damon goes to Elena in her room. He tells Elena that he strongly believes that she loves him, then kisses her. Elena insists that she loves Stefan, and that it will always be Stefan, almost exactly what Katherine had previously told him, leaving Damon heartbroken. In an attempt to hurt Elena he snaps Jeremy's neck, resulting in Elena declaring her hatred for him. Despite this claim, she later saves his life from Bonnie, who takes her anger out on Damon after discovering that his blood enabled Caroline to become a vampire.
