As Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, theologian Dr Robert Beckford investigates remarkable parallels to the Christ story in other faiths, some of them predating Christianity by thousands of years.

The Hindu god, Krishna, was conceived by a virgin and his birth was attended by angels, wise men and shepherds. Buddha was also the result of a miraculous birth, and was visited by wise men bearing gifts. He, too, began his ministry at about 30-years-old and performed such miracles as walking on water and feeding 500.

Some people in India believe that Jesus did not die on the cross but escaped from Roman Palestine and ended up in Kashmir. There, they say, he continued to preach, had a wife and child, and later died and was buried.

Jesus was, of course, born a Jew, and Christians believe he is the Messiah prophesied in the Torah, which is the holy scripture of the Jews. Meanwhile, Muslims revere Jesus as a prophet but do not believe he died on the cross. Instead, according to Islam, God saved him and took him up to heaven, and he will return and be buried next to Muhammed.

In this Channel 4 (UK) Christmas Day programme, Robert Beckford attempts to unravel the mystery of why there are so many versions of the Christ story across the world and asks which is the real one, and where this leaves the Christian story and his own belief in Jesus.

  • this is absolutely nonsense and there is what was predicted or foretold in The Bible, that in the end days, there will be a lot of people claiming that this is not Christ and this is fake... well looks like the prophesies are being fulfilled....

  • @pjuttuka

Which prophecies are those, if you don't mind sharing.

You made a statement, but brought no proof to support your claim. Are people to believe you based on your word alone?

Bring proof of your claim "The Bible, that in the end days, there will be a lot of people claiming that this is not Christ and this is fake" if you speak truthfully.

    Peace.

  • Jesus was just a man, not a prophet of Allah, or a god. There is no historical evidence, for the miracles of Jesus, and Jesus is typically written like a myth, such as the virgin birth, resurrection, etc. The miracles of Jesus, Buddha, etc., are wise tales, to highlight the greatness of them, but they are not literal, and that goes for Muhammad too. All the Abrahamic faiths, are false, and they are not of any god, but mankind.

  • @KevZen2000

You bring a statement but no evidence to support what you say. That which can be proven without evidence and be disproven without evidence.

You are ignorant our Creator gave proof of His existence, so that even those who disbelieve cannot refute the clear proof given to every nation, every being.

What you do now is up to you. My obligation is only to remind and warn.

There is only One God, and all will be called to account for their deeds.

  • @Surah72

Well there is no proof that God exists either... so we can't say anything against the atheists

  • @PizzaBlade17

But there is proof there is a God.

When given a Book and told the Author was there at the beginning of creation, I should expect to find verifiable proof of this claim. And I do in the Quran.

Surah 21:30 not only speaks of the monoblock of the universe and the Big Bang, but also states how all living things are made of water - only discovered at the microscopic, cellular level.

I am able to bring proof to support my beliefs (iman).

    Peace.

  • cont. All paths follow to the same destiny: God. If you do good deeds, if you respect each other, if you help the people in need, if you show comprehension and wisdom, if you do your charity with true love, you are following the path of God.

The rest are just cultural conjectures.

  • I have a theory about this:

God (the Supreme Being, beyond all the churches and religions) sent an avatar (a physical representation, not necessary equal to Him) from time to time to guide and teach the path of understanding between mankind and between man and God. He can assume different forms and teach to different peoples, but the teaching is always the same: love each other as you love thyself. Stop fighting for "Who have the true path". Cont.

  • @SonOfLight1979 Karma & Rebirth means We are ACCOUNTABLE for our actions. We take Responsibility.

Karma&Rebirth means that we enjoy the Gift of Life, over & over again!

Karma&Rebirth means there is no Hell, no sadistic God running a torture chamber

Karma&Rebirth means that We EARN everything. A Hindu must never beg nor take anything that is unearned

Karma&Rebirth means we Hindus earn Praise FROM God! Anyone fool can praise God, but Blessed are the Hindus that aim to earn Praise FROM God!

  • @KevZen2000 I read somewhere that Buddha preached very much against magic & miracles - that if you believed in magic or miracles then you cannot be a Buddhist. Unfortunately after his death some of his followers could not resist making him a God & doing miracles
