PVC air rocket powered from an air compressor. Used around 90 psi and all pressure components are schedule 40 PVC. An electrically actuated sprinkler valve is used and a cordless drill battery powers the valve.

I have achieved up to 170 feet so far. The next one I build will have a much larger air chamber and a longer launch tube.

  • how much psi do you think you can squeeze out of pvc before it gets dangerous?

  • I'd have to look at what schedule rating there is on the PVC. All PVC is rated to a certain PSI rating which by design, you arn't suppose to exceed. Its pretty high if I remember right - but from my testing, it wasn't really more PSI that helped. Because once you started getting higher, the sprinkler valve didn't seem to operate as well. If we could use some sort of quick-dump valve, or even we thought about a manual ball valve that we could manually open quickly, it might help.

  • better then mikes

  • @MrNinjac0w Yeah, I didn't make mine magazine-approved safe. I used an air compressor instead of a lower powered tire pump and I used plastic rocket bodies instead of paper. I tried paper at first but quickly got really tired of uncrumpling them so I went with a light-weight thin PVC for the rocket body. I want to add a parachute deployment next.
