Having seen and heard multiple iterations of this song, I have to say that this is by far the best and most coherent one to my ear. I love this song in any version, but this specific one is truly breath-taking.

There's something about listening to David Bazan that restores something in my soul, and re-ignites my desire to pick up my guitar and start playing and writing songs seriously again. Thanks.

The demo version is the best to date, every version is so awesome to hear...but that original sample on his site of the demo version is the best especially the dual vocal solo :) Plus this is one of the nicest and humbling musicians out there really great to meet converse with and learn about the world through someone else's eyes.

Pt. 2. No, I don't have any reason to believe there is some higher power to be upset about, and yes, religion in general is a cruel, de-humanizing thing. There may be something more out there, I can't prove there isn't, but I have absolutely no reason to think with any certainty that there is. I could spend a lifetime imagining all the things that MIGHT be, but what's the point in that? It's best to live based on what we can assess is most likely true.

A very fair question.
What I am agreeing with in a quote such as "What a cruel god we've got" is the CONCEPT of the god, as-imagined within that religion's framework. I don't believe in the God of The Bible, or that the Bible is anything more than human invention. The character called "God" in that book is a tyrant in my eyes, so when someone from that theological background says, "What a cruel God we've got" I agree with them based on that mindset.

That's fine..
I have a question though.. When you say you agree to the quote, "What a cruel god we've got." Since you don't believe in gods, do you believe there is some kind of higher power to be upset about, or maybe religion in general can be cruel (which I would agree with)... Just wondering..

Re: P1; got'cha, understood.
Re: P2; I'm not pissed at your god (or any gods for that matter). As an atheist I don't believe in them. I'm no more mad at a god than I'm mad at Santa when the present I want doesn't come. Whether or not I have the right god in mind is irrelevant as I'm not convinced that any exist.

A Christian god... The one defined in the bible... Bazan doesn't claim to be a Christian, but he used to. You would assume that he was also refering to the same God in the song that he used to claim as his own..
It's normal to get pissed at god for whatever reason, but if you think that Christians worship a cruel God (which I'm assuming you were refering to this God in your first post), I don't think you have the right God in mind

There's no god actually defined in the song, just referenced by name alone. When someone claims "a god" it is helpful to know which one they're referring to because thousands of versions supposedly exist.
In addition to your comment to me, would you also remind Bazan that this god is not in fact cruel, or would you agree that it is (depending on how you define your particular god)?

The same god sung about in the song

Which god are you referring to?

God doesn't hate you
why has the name of the song changed to cold beer and cigarettes?

The Devil Is Beating his wife was the working demo title. When his recent EP came out he changed the name to Cold Beer And Cigarettes.
