A newer procedure is offering patients with GERD a scar free surgical alternative to treat their condition.

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, occurs when stomach acid and/or bile frequently reflux back into the esophagus. Affecting up to 35 percent of the American population, GERD is a chronic digestive disease that can irritate the lining of your esophagus and cause ongoing heartburn.

The procedure, known as Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication, is done through the mouth. That means no incisions, no scars and less discomfort and a shorter recovery. The traditional laparoscopic fundoplication involves five or six small incisions in the abdomen.
