Excellent lecture on Tawheed, delivered by Abu Khadeejah Abdul-Waahid.

Linguistically Tawheed means: "To make something one, or to assert the oneness of something." However, the Sharee'ah or technical meaning of Tawheed, is: "To single out Allah alone for worship."

Purification through Tawheed is mankind's greatest need.
Testifying that "none has the right to be worshipped except Allah", has the same meaning as: "To worship Allah and to reject anything along with Him", which has the same meaning as: "The Tawheed of Allah."

So, it must be clear that Tawheed is the essence of Islam, and it is the starting and ending point for all goodness and excellence.

Indeed, Tawheed was the reason for the sending of the Prophets and Messengers, whether it be:
Noah (Nuh),
Abraham (Ibrahim),
Jacob (Yaqub),
Ishmael (Ishmael),
Enoch (Idris),
Isaiah (Dhul-Kifl),
Solomon (Sulaimân),
Isaac (Ishaq),
Lot (Lut),
Moses (Musa),
Job (Ayub),
Joseph (Yusuf),
Aaron (Harun),
David (Dawud),
Jesus (Musa)
or Muhammad (peace be upon them all):

"And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allâh (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Tâghût (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Tâghût besides Allâh)." [Quran 16:36]

Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism) has three aspects :

1) Oneness of the Lordship of Allah; Tawhid ar-Ruboobiyah

To believe that there is only one Lord for all the universe, its Creator, Organizer, Planner, Sustainer, and the Giver of security, etc, and that is Allah.

2) Oneness of the Worship of Allah ; Tawheed al-Uloohiyah

To believe and single out Allah alone in all acts of worship, whether it be prayers (salah), supplication (dua), vows or oaths, slaughtering, alms-giving or charity, fasting, hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca), etc.

3) Oneness of the Names and the Qualities of Allah; Tawheed al-Asma was-Sifat

To affirm all the Divine Names and Attributes of Allah in a manner that suits His Majesty, as mentioned in the Quran and the Sunnah such as:

Al-Awwal (The First)
Al-Akhir (The Last)
Ar-Raheem (Most Merciful)
Al-Hakim (The All-Wise)
Al-Aziz (The All-Mighty)
As-Sami (The All-Hearing)
Al-Alim (The All-Knowing)
Ar-Razzaq (The All-Provider)
Al-Ghafur (Oft-Forgiving)
Al-Aliyy (The Most High)
Al-Khabir (The All-Aware)
Al-Kabir (The Most Great)

These names along with the attributes of Allah are to affirmed upon their apparent meaning without asking how (takyeef) and not to make ta'weel (metaphorical interpretation), ta'teel (negation), tamtheel (resemblance) or tahreef (distortion).

These three aspects of Tawheed are included in the Shahadah (La ilaha ill-Allah - None has the right to be worshipped except Allah), which is the key to paradise.

Note this is only CD 1 out of 2 of the lecture.
