Not particularly well known, this one, but Luke's voice is gorgeous here.Every word sung to perfection and never a wrong note.Luke sings right from the heart. I still consider him to be the best singer i've ever heard. Thanks again Kelly, for helping to keep the music alive.

we should all campaign for a national station dedicated to Irish songs and music. Its a disgrace that our beautiful songs arent heard on the airwaves. The mainstream media are a joke or some would say have an agenda; anyway great tune.

Luke Kelly was a master singer, such feeling in every word. How we are so lucky to have so many of his recordings to listen to is very gratifying.

Absolutely the most beautiful, life affirming, soul stirring voice we will ever hear...

Yeah, its true, this song is actually English. It was published as early as 1840 but is obviously older than that. The wording and syntax suggest it may be 18th century or earlier. It was very popular in the US and pops up in anthologies of American folk songs. Laurie Lee's piece "As I walked out one midsummer morning " uses the first verse as title and he claimed it was an old Gloucestershire air sung when he was a boy. Its a great song and proof that good music is international.

I have no wish to resurrect any ancient Anglo-Irish hostility but I dispute your implication that this song is Irish.
It appears in 'The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs' as having been collected by Lucy Broadwood from one Mrs. Vaisey of Hampshire (England) in 1892.
Whatever, we English are not possessive. Folk songs like this are to be shared - internationally.
This is a great song and a very fine rendition that I could not hope to emulate.
