  • Sampras chipping and charging on clay is suicide.

  • his game was serve & volley which he played to perfection and thats part of the reason why he didn't get far on clay.. baseline game & movement r the keys to winning on that surface ! By the way i saw that FO in 96 where he reached the semi's.. that was a great effort by him.

  • More or less...

  • @timafi

People like Mac still go on how he could play on all surfaces, its a joke, get to the finals and then you get respect!

  • @quiet1234

Did he not have other chances, and how many?

  • @quiet1234

Sampras was a time out King

  • @911801111801

Then this guy is not the greatest if he does not care about all the majors?

  • pete could have won on clay but he was a lazy tenis player not prepared to work at rallies and relied on his serve too much even though he had the rest of the shots as well plus his fitness was very poor and therefore couldnt play the long rallies especially not for 7 matches to win the french

  • LOL, no not weak, but terribly inconsistent, top players today are also getting easy rides through the early rounds as Pete did in all of the majors.Connors said if you take the big Bazooka racquets out of the players hand in the last 25 years you would have had a much better tennis game.

Anyways its great to be able to make comments and give your opinions on this site. Thanks for replying!

  • @leverwork1 LOL, so multiple slam winners like Becker, Edberg, Courier, Agassi, Rafter, Kuerten, Kafelnikov, and second tier slam winners like Krajicek, Stich, Bruegerra, are weak comp?

Todays game has lots of guys who are really good, probably more than back then, but has only two or three that are great. Early rounds were easier back then, but the talent curve went up more dramatically . Pete was facing champions in the semis and finals, not just best of the rest like today.

  • Another...

  • @leverwork1 Sampras won Rome in 1994, and had big wins on clay against Russia in the 1995 Davis Cup; he won other small tournaments on clay as well.

To me it seems that he never took clay seriously, and 1997 onward he gave up on it altogether. I wonder if he would have handled it differently if he knew Federer was coming down the pipe.
