A young boynot quite that young..yes much better his name Gregory James Geig hes a freshmen in high school and as he is learning about The Great Gatsby, The Bay of Pigs, and Advanced Algebra, but ultimately he is also trying to learn about himself. Durring the summer of his sophomore year in the month of july on the 12th day his 14th birthday was held. With his birthday naturally came celebration. Family came, cake was served and gifts were given, among the slew of gifts he received, in particular one would play a most pungent role in his life and he was yet to know itHis step brother and his step sister had bought him a video game entitled 2006 Fifa World Cup.
Greg was happy for the gratuity of his brother and sister but to be truthful Greg was never really into soccer or the world cup. I wasnt sure of his reaction to the gift, but I really dont think it was on his wish list. Ive never heard him bring up soccer in our conversations and weve never watched soccer on television we were young American boys we watched and played football! A real mans sport as said by the majority of America.
Not even a week passed until I saw greg again and he couldnt stop talking aboutSoccer and his favorite game. He couldnt stop talking about how the World Cup was going on as we speak and that its being held in Germany and we must watch. He then showed me the video game he received for his birthday called 2006 FIFA World Cup. Greg continued to say that he didnt realize how cool soccer was until he actually played the game and interacted, this game then turned him to watch the biggest sporting event in the world.
Greg was rooting for Germany, for his grandparents were originally from there. Sadly as the cup came to a close the Italians took all the glory and Germany came in Third.
With the world cup over Greg dove into more soccer related subject matter he discovered club teams such as Chelsea in England, Entracht Frankfurt in Germany, and our very own Columbus Crew.
As highschool progressed he became more serious about his German lessons, he started studying outside of class talking to his grandparents and using Rosetta Stone. What had influenced him to become so dedicated to his heritage and learning of the language? Was it simply the game that he received on his birthday?
Greg started studying soccer, the rules, and teams. With the studying of different teams and the game of soccer he learned about many different cultures. He started learning Spanish and itallian in his free time to compliment his German. He liked learning languages for fun. Graduation was coming fast and Greg was unsure about what he was going to major in after he went off to college. After Highschool there were going to be a lot of challenges he would have to face in the future, like deciding what major and classes to study in college but for now he did not know. Then in the summer, he decided that he would study International Business and put his use of languages, and understandings of culture to use while also pursuing a career in business. His ultimate plan is to get a job in Germany and live there.
A video game made to campaign the World Cup attracted a young boy to learn a totally new game, new languages, propelled him to make a car eer decision and helped him ultimately learn about himself.
