I started using photoshop like 2 days ago and keep being told that the images I try to work on from my image files (jpeg) and I get a popup box saying I need a photoshop image file to work on the image. but I can't find out how to convert it to psd and then load it in ps. I've decided to show my newbie ignorance and ask what the procedure is??? have mercy and condescend to respond to this plea. Most every tutorial just seems to touch on the subject. I need duuh help.

I use my Photoshop Elements and Picnik. Save in Photoshop as 'PSD' or 'PDD' to go back and finish layers later.

For basic image resizing/cropping I use Ifranview, it's light and alot quicker to load than photoshop.
But of course for image manipulation I use photoshop!
