My 15th video in a series I'm working on for some of my favorite songs from the past.
"By most accounts, George Jones is the finest vocalist in the recorded history of country music.".....the first sentence in George Jones lengthy biography from AllMusic.com. Certainly that statement can be extended to include all recorded music in all genres.......his voice is that good.
George Jones released the album "Memories Of Us" in 1975. It was among a string of mid-70's albums produced by the legendary Billy Sherrill. These albums including "The Grand Tour", "Memories Of Us", "Alone Again", "The Battle" and finally the finest album he recorded with his wife, Tammy Wynette, "Golden Ring", are my very favorite George Jones records. The beauty and power of the recordings during this period is extraordinary and although George Jones has many, many more fine records from periods both before and after, I'm always drawn to this particular period.
When I was younger I only listened to rock and would never consider listening to George Jones or other country artists. I hated country music. I recall buying George Jones' "40 Greatest Hits" and being absolutely floored by the voice that was singing the songs. I listened to it constantly for several months and then began buying some older albums....I've been a huge fan since. George Jones does have some lesser efforts, mainly due to weaker songwriting but on all his recordings, and there are many (nearly 100 records released in the 6 decades he has been active), one thing remains....that incredibly pure and true voice.
It was difficult to choose one song to do, but this song "Memories Of Us" is a deeply touching look back at a love lost, filled with regret and longing.....it's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.
The video is nothing fancy, just some images from the fifties and long transitions. I could have used the leaf element to better effect, but I didn't want to spend anymore time messing around with it.....the song is the thing!
Anyway, hope you enjoy it!
[Lyrics]
The old man has sold his apples
Isn't there any more
And the city square don't seem as big
As it did before.
They tore down that old drug store
We used to love so much
But everything is still the same
In my memories of us.
That old school bus has long stopped runnin'
And I heard the driver died
And the movie house is all boarded up
Where we set side by side.
And the sign that said 'State Campions'
It's covered up with dust
But everything it's still the same
In my memories of us.
In my memories of us
Things are still the same
For yesterdays is something
Tomorrows can not change.
Where freckles just don't disappear
Ands pigtails never rust
And everything it's still the same
In my memories of us.
My memories of us...
This song is so special to me and you've made it even MORE special with your touching video. I'm from small town Tennessee and this song tells the story (exactly !) of my mom and dad. They were everything this video (and lyrics) portray. Even the part of the haunting memories my dad had after she was gone. THANK YOU MetalGuruMessiah and George Jones !!!

I'm so glad you enjoyed my effort for this gorgeous tune....between George's vocals and the simple sad lyric, it's hard to top. I think it's so cool that your parents were this song! I thought of my own parents when I was working on the video...the images reminded me of my own small hometown....thought I went to school in the 70's it still looked awfully like the 50's! LOL!
Thanks for watching it and for the kind of comment that makes me glad I made the video!

George brings the heartfelt feelings out in all of us. He brings back memories of my mammaw Surrie now passed away, and my pappaw Earl who misses her so dearly. Time is all we have, and it seems so short now. I used to think everybody would live forever. Now all I have are memories, and I see now how I am storing my memories of my very close loved ones because we never know when its our time. I love my family!!!
