Psychics and Mediums are the lowest form of scum in the con man industry. Where as the Nigerian email scam preys on the greedy, psychics prey on the grieving taking advantage of personal loss to line their own pockets.

The John Edward, Doris Stokes,James van Praagh, Sylvia Browne, etc of this world are scum who you should spit on if you ever pass them in the street. Please refrain from hitting them however as I deplore physical violence.

The following text is from an old mediums textbook, 'Pages from a Medium's Notebook':

"These 'facts of life' we must color - add mysticism, coloring, glamour, tragedy, detail and an element or two - then, too, perform as humans, grasp eagerly this credit of our intelligence, achieve our place in the sun - because, due to the profound effects of our efforts with our client, he in turn tells his neighbour, creating another effect (usually exaggerated) and in turn, another cause - a visit from another human (client.)

There is no such thing as a genuine medium, i.e. a person who can, at will, communicate with departed spirits or obtain messages. Nor is there such a person that can, with accuracy, and repeatedly do so, predict the future events of one's life. Such predictions are not real, but are palmed off as a guise.

Remember, the more worried a person, the more gullible they become. Nervousness is a marked and indication of worry and such can be read in the faces and actions of every person.

When a client comes to see you - you should be mentally superior. .. do not hesitate, therefore, to assume this superior attitude, tho you need not let it become apparent to your client. It is for your own benefit - not the client!

Look mentally down upon this poor creature, take your cues and prepare to help them, well realizing that if you do (or don't) give a successful reading, you will get your time fee, but turn thoughts towards giving satisfaction, and helping this brother or sister who in turn will preach the gospel of your fine work and lead other friends into your presence, that they too may leave an offering for the coffers of your bank.

To commercialize spiritualism, you must carry your cause to the people. The most profitable channel is the churches and the meetings. There you come in contact with a hand-picked, receptive audience - aghast and waiting your word . . . That's just a part of the spook racket."

Watch this video closely. Did John Edward tell this woman anything new about her mother? Did he reveal anything other than the mundane aspects of every family relationship? Whose mother doesn't have a collection of favourite recipes stored only in their head?

What about this exchange starting at 6:35:
John Edward: "Wait, do you still see Terri?"
Woman: "Oh my God. --- Terri is my aunt whose her sister in-law."
JE: "Is Terri still here?"
W: "Yes she is."
JE: "OK cause your mum wants you to say hello to Terri."

What is this, the great John Edward cannot tell if Terri is alive or dead? How is this woman to say hello to Terri if she is dead? It really beggars belief.

I realise that many people will leap to the defence of these scum, however all that proves is that you are fools & I predict you will be easily parted with your money.

@mddawson - you generalise. One shonky laywer does not an entire profession stigmatise; yes, there are assuredly people who pass themselves off as mediums/psychics who are nothing of the sort, but that does not make all who are mediums and/or psychics, a con. My point stands - why do you feel the need to attack others' beliefs; they're not hurting anyone by so believing. Are you so insecure in your "rational" beliefs that you need to denigrate to make yourself feel "big", or "correct"?

@dalrieda How do you tell the difference between a fake psychic & a real one??? Get the book "The Full Facts Book of Cold Reading" by Ian Rowland. He does readings with a far greater degree of accuracy than John Edward but will tell you straight out he is not using psychic powers. As for not hurting people - how is pandering to their inability to move on from the death of loved ones (at a substantial cost) helping them?

Why do so many people here feel the need to attack others' beliefs? My beliefs have been borne out by my own experiences; they don't need widespread public approval to be 'real' to me. Frankly, I couldn't care less what the 'public' opinion of my beliefs is. But it's incredibly saddening to see people expressing their beliefs here and being shot down in flames of vitriol. People deserve to be able to hold their beliefs without them being attacked by others who feel differently.
