It nearly stopped working in 1985 when I nearly broke it! I used to be a lifeguard there and one morning all of the other lifeguards were too hungover to start work, so I went to open up. I forgot to shut down one of the valves in the pump room and when I started the pump, that fountain was about 10ft high for about 30 seconds until the override cut in.
Great to see this footage, not much changed between 1967 and 1985, except that people didn't wear ties to go to the park!
and why is the park not the same today ?no reason apart from privatization and greed, spent many happy summers in that pool and the cafe, now the gallery (never did agree with its conversion or the removing of the rose garden architecture for iron rails ! and concreate) there were park keepers, and a direct local work force onsite that took pride in there work and home ! and we now know they were cheaper too !
WHY IS SOUTHWARK PRONOUNCED SUTTARK? WHY NOT SPELL IT SUTTARK AND BE DONE WITH IT? OR EVEN SPELL IT AS TWO WORDS ... SOUTH WARK?
