Sri Lankan police raid opposition Fonseca office

Sri Lankan police raided the campaign office of defeated presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka, following allegations he was planning a coup.

The Sri Lankan government accused former army chief Fonseka of plotting to overthrow newly elected President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Police allegedly broke into Fonseka's office in the capital Colombo saying they were looking for army deserters.

"We are so sad. We got this information that our campaign office has been raided by the police and joint forces. So we went there because we contest it and we also want to ensure that no unwanted incidents occur, because as far as we are concerned we conduct our election campaign with clean hands. We never use weapons. So therefore on talking to the officers concerned, they confirmed there was nothing found. And then we asked them whether they are going to take anyone there, because they were under the impression that those were visitors. So now we have confirmed they are all retired people. So we are going back."

Fonseka led the government's military offensive that defeated the Tamil Tigers in May but he resigned as army chief shortly afterwards to join the political opposition.

He was defeated by Rajapaksa in a bitterly contested presidential election. Fonseka disputed the official result and has accused the government of stealing more than one million of his votes.

The government denies Fonseka's allegations, and accused him of organising a coup and of being involved in an alleged attempt on Rajapaksa's life.

c'mon guys now live with this. The best president has been selected and SF and opposition cant stand it. Shame on you!! Which opposition said any election held and lost was free and fair. NO ONE. Same with SF and Ranis party. There were no violence in streets after the election from ppl. That means they are happy with this. Minority who lost are shouting. Again the western influences have been cracked by Sri Lankanas. Hooray to Mahinda!!!!! He is the one and only president we like!!!

This election is not valid. Govt violated so many election guidelines which include but not limited to mis use of public owned media and other assets, mis use of public officers, bribes to voters, mass scale vote rigging, threatening of election officers and altering election records. In other words it is another Saddam Hussein type election. This was confirmed by Election Commissioners post election speech. Foreign Govts should look into that they will be dealing with illegally appointed govt.

I am surprised, why Mr. Fonseka does not accuse Mr. Mangala of stealing more than one of his balls.
