#1 R&B song for 7 weeks! Peacock 1612 Released in Late February 1953.
It established Leiber & Stroller as important songwriters. When Elvis covered
it in in 1956 it became inextricably to the rise of Elvis Presley as a world phenomen.

  • id LOVE that record player..

  • Thankx . . I bought that old Admiral consloe stereo for $25 at a garage sale! It also plays 8 tracks, and is circa 1968.

Good sound, it makes the old 78s sound good.

  • Amazing record, a lot more feeling than the Elvis version. Great guitar and great drums. Makes more sense coming from a woman too.

  • More raw the Elvis's version. Wonderful

  • Mattie Fields wrote this song for Big mama thornton i no the family and thornton and fields are fam. the fields get checks for this song. hound dog

  • As someone who grew up with both Elvis and the entire blues genre in her life, I have to say that this version is the absolute best. No offence to The King, (and my mom-mom Josephine, for she'd kick my ass if she heard this if she wasn't dead, Lord rest her soul) but he butchered it.

  • Oh dear just listening to Lee Fields, meant to say woman. Pls forgive me Big Mama and Gelmann2. Are LP's and 45's worth any money these days. My parents kept all their soul records and some really old and in mint condition.

  • Thank you for sharing. First time hearing it. I prefer this man's version over Elvis'.

  • @gelmann2

Wow I've been looking for one of those old consoles. They should start making those again. The technology is perfect for it. Yours sounds great!

  • I was told by an authoritative source that the dogs howling at the end included Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the song's writers.

  • I have a copy of the 1969 version (more Saxophone and has that "Aretha Franklin era" feel to it).

  • Wow I'd never heard this before. Good stuff.

  • awesome

  • this is much better than the elvis version obviously the vocals here are better, but the funky rockabilly guitar is classic. sort of reminds me of early CCR guitar like suzie Q. This is awesome, thanks for posting.
