I never cared very much about this aria until I heard it with Ann. She is glorious and brings so many nuances and colours. Thanks for posting it.

She pays attention to the meaning of every single word. One of THE MEZZOS of our era. Wonderful.

@DanielBaroque Don't forget Paula Rasmussen. Even though she's not well represented, her Serse is the best there is.

carosaxone, I agree with you that Ann Hallenberg is a force to be reckoned with. She sings with great conviction and has a beautiful, dark, shining mezzo voice. And there's Nathalie Stutzmann, who sings a less flashy version with true heroism and in the intended range, since she's a true contralto. If you haven't heard her, I recommend that recording of rare Mozart arias (it's on YouTube). Happy listening.

Until now certainly the BEST version sung. Ann is one of the best mezzo (along with Marina de Liso and Joyce Di Donato) of the 18th century. She is simply fantastic, no words to express the beauty and perfection. Thks to Thrax1982

kudos. hallenberg is among the very few singers that will explore an aria and discover for anyone else its hidden beauty

Amen!
Who is the woman in the painting at 0:42? I've seen so many portraits of her and I have no idea who she is.

It's a detail from a painting of Judith by some 19th century French artist.

Sorry, the painter was actually German,
August Riedel.
You can find the full painting at Wikipedia.

I doubt that anyone has done it better or that anyone ever will. This is the definitive version.
