This was the first sci-fi show that appealed to the intellect rather than overindulging in phasers and weird shit. I remember one episode where they went through a black hole....and believe it or not, it was a catalyst for me to pursue physics! No bullshit! :)
even if the moon could or could not survive just the idea of space travel has always been on many whom minds are open the whole universe and accept the concept we are not alone. so it is ashame it could not have continued, for those who want more!!!!
@shmuli9 Yes indeed. Well, there are a lot of theories crafted to explain around all this. Visit the "eagletransporter" website. There's still a lot of lively discussions going on over there. The upshot for how the moon could have left and intact is that there was some mysterious "invisible hand" in all of this. Something beyond corporeal understanding. God perhaps? Who knows... Science fiction does take its liberties.
@informant007 I've kind of thought the same thing. This is my all-time fave sci-fi programme, but if you think about it, it's just silly for the reason you say plus these: the moon would HAVE to be travelling at some VERY fast velocity, the arrival of Earth's moon near another planet would also cause major disruptions; if it's a MOON base, why did everyone have lasers?; with all those Eagles being destroyed, would they have run out of them?; [cont'd]
Well, the series started off on the wrong foot in many respects. The idea of blasting the moon out of Earth orbit by a massive nuclear explosion was just bunk. Nuclear waste does not explode like this; it gives off deadly radiation. Even if it exploded, the moon wouldn't be pushed out of orbit--it would've been partially pulverized. Time to encounter those planets would take generations. Supplies on Alpha would not last. Eagles would burn up in atmosphere based on design. Hard to buy it!!

They shouldn't have changed it in Season 2 but still bring in Maya in the first episode of the season. That's how they should have done it.

Season two was much better and my favorite over season one. I hope to be able to buy the second season on DVD?

@informant007 [cont'd] with so many Alphan personel dying, wouldn't they have both enough life support and room for people to HAVE children?

space 1999 should have been kept in its original format. the new season made it into a kiddie-show.
