John Del Signore calls himself The Mercury Man. His complex act involves standing
motionless for hours at a time, breaking posture only when a donation is received.
After being rejected from MUNY, Mercury Man continues to bring his "stationary art"
to the subway, arguing that the program creates a two-tiered system underground,
entitling sponsored performers to police protection and a sense of MTA-endorsed
legitimacy, while the freelance musicians are left to fend for themselves.
