Yeah, I know it's a lengthy title. I've been practicing for a run of this game at SDA's Awesome Games Done Quick 2 marathon next year. What you see here is only the second time I've completed Hard without using a continue, but I'm mostly pleased with this practice run.

I should point out that while the videos are split up by stage, this was actually a single-segment run. I split them up for easier uploading, but it's probably also helpful for the viewer. I split the actual recording at stage 5 though, because I didn't want to risk another computer chugging incident like with the F Final video.

Anyway, I'll warn you now: This run contains frequent Drunken Twist spam. If this offends you, that's just too bad. It's obviously very "cheap", but I've noticed it's far more versatile than just "spam on one guy and win." I tend to use it for three reasons:

1. It's safe and effective for getting the first hit on most enemies.
2. It's a good way to counter enemies after a missed guard break attempt (particularly Great Sensei and Obese Ninja).
3. It's a great way to keep attacking even when in a crowd, because sweeps are much weaker and counter hits take time to set up.

With that out of the way, let's comment on the stage itself:

1-1: I have no freaking clue why enemies randomly forget how to block. Hard mode enemies are usually fond of blocking quickly, but that first guy was such a jerk. I also meant to Charged Punch the fatty, but oh well.

I did a poor job of handling the guys outside the saloon too. The plan was obviously to take most of them down with the plank, but the stupid mohawk likes to mess with that by getting up too quickly.

Now about the blue demon, I'll admit that without Side Swipe or Drunken Twist, I'm not good at fighting them. I'm not allowed to unleash on it here because I need that for the fairy challenge in 1-2. So this fight usually ranges from "really good" to "holy crap, has this guy played the game before?"

1-2: The fairy challenge went freakishly well this time. I usually have trouble getting enough of them caught in the Charged Punch, and I'm not really sure why. This is something I really need to work on, because if the unleash wears off and I'm stuck with 3 guys around, my odds aren't good.

1-3: I need 20,500 gold to buy Floating Butterfly and Drunken Twist. Floating Butterfly is my main source of damage for stage 1 and then becomes the quick stun technique from 2 on. I could use Mach Speed Jab instead, but it either doesn't do as much damage or costs more. Also, 3 hits is good for forcing an enemy to block without getting parried (5 on DIE is stupid).

I did the second fairy challenge to ensure that I'd have 10,000 gold before Elvis 1. I'm definitely considering dropping this challenge from the plan because of the poor reward, but I absolutely do not want to go into 1-6 without Crescent Kick. It's simply not pretty otherwise.

Also, a small note about that fairy challenge. You'll notice some side dodge cancels after the first two sides are destroyed. I learned this from a Nico Video tutorial series, but for some reason, I have yet to see it used anywhere else. It's really hard to do consecutively though.

1-4: It's probably time for me to get a new controller, because this game is quite hard on the poor thing. Sometimes I don't think the game even cares that I spin the stick to get out of grabs. It could've been my own stupidity though, for all I know.

1-5: Yes, I did just Drunken Twist spam that green demon. I don't like dying in three hits. It's not very cool. Also, checking that magazine wasn't very cool because it was a mistake. It's probably a bad habit from running Easy mode so much.

The unleash on the second green demon was a mistake too. For some reason I thought it would be faster to annihilate that thing and then regain the tension on the elites. Common sense says I should've finished the demon normally, unleashed on the elites, and THEN checked the magazine for the refill. Lesson learned.

Picking up all the loot was clumsy, but money is crucial early on in New Game+ runs. It shouldn't be hard to guess why.

I killed the third demon because I didn't want to risk turning to run and then getting clobbered from behind. Green demons in particular love to do exactly that, so yeah.

1-6: Poor Elvis. I'm not man enough to fight you fairly in a run, so this is what happens instead.

  • are you Molotov then?

  • Yeah, that's me.

  • Kick ass man. I love to see people still playing this game like me, and on Hard, respect. Do you want some advice for facing the demons? I'm going to check your other vids

  • Thanks. I'm always open to advice, especially for red demons. I learned how to easily counter-juggle blue/green demons earlier today, but unfortunately it doesn't work on the red ones. Fighting fairly just isn't as fun, you know?
