I went to one of the shanty towns near Johannesburg and got to know a few guys who told me about it.

  • its funny that dude should ask you what you doing there... i was wondering the same thing... its not that common for europeans to visit the slums of south africa

  • You should read "Citizen and Subject" by Mahmood Mamdani. He explains how colonialism has affected the people of Africa; especially those in South Africa. Very interesting read if you're interested.

  • You have to be extremely careful in townships, no mater how many skills you have. I know of family members being raped just passing by them:(

  • You know, these are just normal people. Just living in poor conditions.

  • @Yaiyasmin I see.... so what are those tricks if you don't mind me asking? I'm heading there myself soon

  • I'd say You sound more English.. or maybe from S.A? Nice vid..

  • It was kind of funny that when he asked you why you were there you went into the process of how the video would be produced...his expression was like "I know what the process of making videos is silly girl, but are you here as a Non-Black person to make another 'Poor, destitute, African people video'?" Of course at that point he was interested in giving you an articulate break down of the squatter situation as to not be lumped into the "Ignorant/Un-Intellectual African" stereotype. Good stuff.
