An interview with artist Ben Rivers about his new work Slow Action, commissioned and produced by Picture This and Animate Projects. Exhibited at Picture This November 2010.

Slow Action considers possible future Utopias evolving on isolated islands. Filmed in four locations around the world, the ideas behind this work stem from the artist's investigation into the field of island bio-geography - the study of how species and climates evolve differently when isolated and surrounded by an unlike ecosystem.

16mm cinemascope footage combines with animation and a soundtrack featuring a spoken text developed in collaboration with science fiction novelist Mark von Schlegell.

  • I saw this work a one successive film last night at the FNC in Montreal. It felt like a masterpiece. I recommend films by Ben Rivers to anyone. I have never experienced anything quite like what he creates.
