This recording made in 1926 by the Dixie Syncopators was King Oliver's band formed after his bust-up with the members of the Creole Jazz Band, which included Louis Armstrong. Oliver was a shrewd business man and the Creole boys realised that he was ripping them off financially, so they quit, only for Oliver to form the equally star studded Syncopators. Sugar Foot lends itself well to the heavily arranged format that was beginning to characterise late 20s jazz. I have never heard a better version of this stomp, often known as Dippermouth Blues. Kid Ory tbn, Albert Nicholas, Barney Biggard clt, Luis Russell pno, Bud Scott bjo and "play that thing" - say no more!
What a man and what a musician!A terrific version of this tune whatever one calls it.Thank you Wolfie for this clip.
