7/18/09 - Sawa's goal lifts Freedom over Athletica, 1-0

After a scoreless first half, Homare Sawa snuck her shot inside the near post in the 74th minute to lift the Washington Freedom to a 1-0 win over the Saint Louis Athletica on Saturday, July 18 at RFK Stadium. The goal was Sawa's first of the season. With the win, the Freedom moved into fourth place in the WPS standings.

Ms. Sawa did a hat trick against Mexico in the Germany World Cup 2011, and a great goal against Sweden in the semi finals (Japan won 3-1). Should be a great game tonight in the finals Japan-US!

she had been sick so since it was just a friendly pia didn't make her play. but she still suited up and warmed up in case she was suddenly needed. she did say she wished she could catch a plane to dc and play vs the freedom and then fly back to rochester.

I was there, at the US/Canada game, and I was SO depressed that Hope didn't get in. She was warming up and cooling down with the rest of the team, so I don't think it was injury: I would have assumed Pia would have switched her out at half.
