This isn't really that uncommon. This is a standard philidor checkmate, seen as early as the 1700s.

Oh wow, that checkmate was classy.
He should've known not to put his king in the corner it's always a bad move. When the pieces on the board aren't at full it's actually safer to expose your king so he has a range of movement. That's the danger of castling too.

Right, when pieces are traded and the game is approaching the end game, it's usually not a good idea to castle, limiting the power of the king.
