Thats sounds like either a timing belt/chain tentioner or a fuel problem if its fuel it could be either injectors (dirty/misfiring/ecu) or fuel pressure (dirty filter/weak pump)
@krapfeaster i know... i dont own my e46 any more... now i live in colombia south america... enjoying a better quality of life...
but its tru... def get rid of the vanos... its not worth the ''extra gas milage it gives you...'' any way real race cars... run v-tec ALL THE TIME... lol
mine failed, get rid of it if you can. Mine grenaded needed to do complete tear down, biddies chipped a cam sprocket tooth. You're lucky if a failure of the VANOS is just the VANOS. =]
@RedTurbocar i get all that.... thank you for your input cheif... i just dont know what to do about mt advanced vanos... lol
i just wanna get rid of that freeking thing... even though it does a good job at "saving" me gas mileage... lol i just dont feel like dropping $2500 into a solenoid that will fail again... you see my point?
VAC Motorsports has Vanos elimination kits for the S54, that's whats on this motor actually....it's not recommended for a street car however as you lose a lot of low end torque.....on a race motor, you A. Won't be spending much time below 4K rpm and B. Have different cams that cannot be used with Vanos

@2URBO2 no such thing for the s54... the people that know rebuild the seals and its a meticulous job... lol
the mr vanos guy apparently re engineered a part too... the cam sprockets i think

@240SSONLY Hehe, i dont. Irony aint my strong side.
But i guess both are good, look around at ebay for packages from them. You know, DIY packages.
