Neri Oxman is the polymath MIT Media Lab fellow who graced the cover of our Most Creative People issue for her work tearing down the traditional walls in architecture and engineering. Here she discusses her notion of a new design mindset that is performance-focused and indifferent to disciplinary boundaries.

  • Eroding "specialization" I love it!

  • A beautiful performer in a beautiful form.

I wonder if Athena would like a new temple?

How would Neri design a new "Parthenon"?

I love to see some thinking in this area. How do we design structures for "archetypes"?

  • my freaking lord... she could be as ugly as a dying walrus.... but with that brain i will still be with her my whole life... well.. as a second thougth... shes better this way, i dont like dying walruses

  • It's just too self-absorbed.

  • It's a lot of double talk and twisted concepts. Design principles incorporating engineering concepts have existed for a century. So what's new? Bring her out of the lab, the mind games of academia, and into the real. There's a lot more to be said for rational, pragmatic and effective design.
