Here's a demo of the touch-to-dial feature on the IBM Simon smartphone. The phone is circa 1992/1993. It is certainly not as elegant as the modern approach of automatically parsing numbers, but it works. I am not a lawyer. I'm just posting this as something interesting for people to consider.
