Hi, I'm David with Smartscapes, LLC here in Nashville, Tennessee on a beautiful, early Spring day. I'm here to talk to you about planting with deciduous shrubs. Here behind me, you'll find a deciduous shrub. It's called Elaeagnus, and it's actually a perfect time of year to tape it because it's coming back out and soon it's going to be full and huge and nice and pretty. When you're planting a deciduous shrub, there's a couple things to be considered and it's usually size and look. What size of deciduous shrub do you need? What space does it need to fill? What are you trying to achieve with that plant? And over here as I pointed out earlier, are Elaeagnus. We have it planted beside the garage. It's a small area and it's nice and it's not seen much but it gives a great form in the Winter with the branches showing and then during the Summer it gives a great accent because it kind of weeps and it gets all over the place. So right here that was a great choice and depending on what area of the country you're in you're going to have a world of different options and I'll just show you a few more from here from Middle Tennessee. Here you'll find a couple different choices of deciduous shrubs. Now these were picked for another reason. We didn't need to fill a massive space and we didn't need to have it just kind of a hedgerow type deal. What we needed was accent with interest and that's what you find here. We have a Crimson Barberry over here and it turns a great purplish maroon color during the Summer months and it's fairly lush during the Fall. Again it's deciduous. It will drop its leaves. Over here we have some Spirea that it gives great color and contrast sitting beside the Barberry. So, we've picked these out because they're going to stay small and they're going to contrast and give a nice backdrop. Now we'll cover a couple other deciduous shrubs and the reasons why we put them there. Over here we have some Ambinas. We planted a grouping of three and there's a couple different reasons why we planted them over here. Number one, it's full light so we needed something that would be able to survive the full sun. Number two, we wanted something that would be larger than just an average foundation planting and that will grow in larger than average foundation planting because we've got to cover this massive amount of brick over here on the side of the garage. Over here, we're covering another deciduous shrub and this is a Hydrangea. There's a couple of reasons why we planted it over here. We had a large space we wanted to cover and it's highly shaded and we did want the impact of the flowering component on it so this is another example of how to plant deciduous shrubs. In this video we've covered several different things in planting deciduous shrubs. Number one, planting, you've got to decide what space and what function you want the plant to fill, number two, is it going to be full sun or shade or is it going to be a mix? Number three, do you want flowering or nonflowering type plants? And these are all things that you have to consider when you're planting deciduous shrubs.
