Ever wondered if you can get a couple more years of life out of your aging 1st Gen Mac Pro? How about being able to double its speed? Watch this video and I'll show you how in a few easy steps. You will learn how to safely and efficiently swap out your old Dual 2-Core CPU's and replace them with Dual 4-Core CPU for a total of 8 Cores running up to 3ghz!

  • How can you tell it's burned out?

  • I don't know how long the screws are since I did not actually remove them but rather loosen them. I don't think you want to remove them completely since it might be difficult to re-attach them to the logic board if you completely take them out.

  • On eBay. They tend to come and go, and the pricing seems to fluctuate quite a lot. Do a search for X5365 or X5365 Pair and you should come up with some results.

FYI, I paid about $500 for two CPU's, but as I said, pricing seems to vary quite a bit and I've seen them go for almost double that (which IMHO doesn't make the swap as financially sound of a decision).

  • Any questions? Ask away and I'll try to answer them as quickly as possible.

Also...Part 2 should be up by this coming week-end!

  • And I forgot to say thank you for the original poster!!!!

  • After getting two ES X5365, I spent a half day to buy thermal paste, different kinds of screw drivers, anti static wrist band. The screw driver for removing heat sink is so difficult to find.

And then around 3 hours to look at these videos and follow everything. Finally my Mac Pro 1,1 is working as it was with almost two times of power!

I also upgraded my Mac firmware from 1,1 to 2,1 before these works so that X5365 can be recognized. Please search "netkas" for more firmware update.

  • @midphase It’s the second one above dimm riser A . All other capacitors have a flat top but that one looks cracked.

  • At 4:20 you can see a BURNED OUT CAPACITOR on the far right on the motherboard. You should replace that before upgrading the CPUs

  • hi how long are the screws in the memory cage that atach to the logic board

  • MAN! IS THIS POSSIBLE? THIS IS FREAKY YET OPTIMISTIC

    thank you :)

  • @vajksziget7a I think he get them on Newegg.
