But a presidential candidate who gives a speech at the Brandenburg Gate--with virtually no resume of accomplishments--and claims, at his inauguration, that "this is the moment when the waters cease to rise" is a man with more self-confidence than good sense.

Call my thesis useless, but Obamacare's disrepute, Brown, Christie, McDonnell, and the largest political reordering in 80 years (that's the November midterms, son) threatens Obama's second term.

@hookalakah Do you think he claimed to be a wizard or something? He never claimed to have rhetorical powers or to rely on rhetoric. The reason people think he has them is that he kicked @ss in the presidential race by speaking better than everyone else. However, the reasons for his win do not consist purely of rhetorical superiority. He also tapped into the ideas of the electorate. Their (often bad) ideas are a factor too, and sometimes you can't change them with speeches. Your idea is useless.

Obama campaigned in Massachusetts against Scott Brown; he's now a senator. He campaigned in New Jersey against Chris Christie; he’s now the governor. He campaigned in Virginia against Bob McDonnell; he’s now governor. He spoke for the health care plan; it became less popular. He campaigned in 2010 for the Democrats, they were shellacked. He flew to Copenhagen to get Chicago the Olympics; it was the first city eliminated. There is no evidence that he has the rhetorical powers he is relying on.

I the UK, we've been stung by the banking collapse worse than just about anyone, and are very angry. At the G20 meeting the French Prez did the usual stamping of feet and 'I'll walk out' stuff if major changes weren't made, then had to run back when the US and UK backed his proposals. I think Obama is the real deal. Let's hope the changes last longer than the memory of the shit the corps' put us through.
