Indeed. One can hardly say they 'understand' at all, I'd say, if by understand it is meant they have justification for their beliefs. Apprehending the mystery of existence with certainty is what philosophers (and scientists as you said) do.

The universe and reality itself is largely a mystery, and up until now it has been mostly philosophers and scientists that have made any effort to understand it, everyone else takes reality for granted, which they understand only superficially.

Nihilistic rubbish. Philosophy is the most noble and worthy pursuit known to man and far from being irrelevant or barren, is now more than ever central and abundant.
