  • She's definetely the best Aida. Verdi wrote this opera specially for Leontyne

  • One of those rare female artist. I love her voice, her technique and her sensitivity.

  • @albertthrelkeld I love her Leontynisms. Give her a break! This is from '80, she retired shortly after this in '85 or '86. She had been singing Aida for 30 years starting in the 50's. Her recordings were done mostly in the 70's when she was not a young singer anymore and her voice sounded more like on this video: darker, husky, almost a mezzo. Leontyne's voice was at it's best in the 50's and 60's. Her first recording of Aida in '62 under Solti is great. Her final Aida in '85/86 was great!

  • The great Leontyne. She certainly deserves her laurels. Nevertheless, I hear a big hole in Leontyne's voice. The middle and bottom registers don't have the focus, that silvery metal in the voice that is needed to carry the tone without sounding husky or pushed. This was her great weakness despite all her accomplishments. She had a floating top and the power to stir an audience. She will forever be in the history books as a great artist. One has to simply overlook the Leontynisms.

  • @CalifaJohn I know this is two years late, but they were friends.

  • too rough...too fast?

  • The reason this is glorious is because Leontyne OWNED the role of Aida. It seemed written for her by Verdi. By 1980, she had sung it countless of times since the 1950's. She probably knew Aida in her sleep! I don't care for Leontyne's "rougher" 1970's and early 80's voice. She had better technique and a bloom in her voice in the 50's and 60's, the latter decade when her career took off. But she is a great singer and still is. Her voice was well preserved

  • What can you say? That is living proof why she owns this role. She was on the money that evening. I got chills and even more chills when she began begging the gods for mercy. WOW

  • @metropolitan1966 Tell it Sister, tell it ALL!!

  • @bensmith32 AMEN AND AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She MUST live forever!
