Jacques Brel Amsterdam French and English subtitles

Brel's 1964 masterpiece Amsterdam has been make known to the world mostly through cover versions by David Bowie, Mort Shuman, Scott Walker, Dave Van Ronk, Rod McKuen, The Dresden Dolls, Ute Lemper, John Denver, Diamanda Galas, Hildegarde Nef, and countless others I don't even know about. This is a new carefully crafted, much worked over, and we hope, exact translation of a well known, widely covered song. Performance from VHS of October 1966 Farewell performance at the Olympia.

Walker, Bowie, Simone, Sinatra, etc - many have covered Brel, and many of their covers are well done. By covering Brel's work, they have, perhaps, exposed many a listener to Brel's music who might otherwise remain unaware.

But, there is nothing like Brel doing Brel.

After watching this performance, no doubt - this man is of another world.
