Storm Chasers returns Sunday, Oct. 18th @ 10pm EP on Discovery!

Check out Reed's ten favorite twister encounters: http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/storm-chasers-reeds-top-ten/?smid=YTDSC-YTD-PLP

On Discovery Channel's "Storm Chasers," Reed and company spot a gustnado. While gustnados are shallow and short lived rotating winds, they never produce enough power to develop into a tornado. Learn more about tornadoes on Storm Chasers.

  • that's cool! I'm need intro this

  • gustnado, fire whirl, waterspout, land spout, dust devil, tornado

    snow devil,

    OH MY

  • @Coonstafabio

Sorry, but I don't think your info is correct. A dust devil, and btw I live in so. Ariz. wher in the summer we see big ones every day, sometimes 5 or more at a time, is simply hot air at the surface rising, and has nothing to do with it meeting horizontal shear. A gustnado, I'm a chaser, and have seen many, are just whirling vortexes of air formed by a thunderstorm's straight-line downdraft winds. They do not rotate as the result of rotation inside the storm like a tornado does.

  • dust devil carries dust,

    gustnado carry debris.

  • dustdevils are pure sand and dust, gustnadoes are extremely weak tornadoes

  • Oh I see~ :3 Thanks for informing me. <3

  • A dust devil is formed when hot rising air meets horizontal wind sheer, so they don't need storms to form. Gustnadoes are just rotating updrafts along the edge of a thunderstorm. It stands for "Gust front Tornado".

So basically, Gustnadoes need thunderstorms and Dust Devils don't.

  • Wondering Whats the difference with a Dust devil and a Gustnado...?
