Ken Iisaka, a finalist in the Fifth Van Cliburn Foundation International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs performs Nikolai Kapustin Concert Etude Op.40, No.1: "Prelude" at his California home on his Hamburg Steinway B.

He sat down, pressed "record" and here is what came out. One take. No cuts.

The stills were taken a week later at Ed Landreth Auditorium at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Tx, while he was goofing around, playing the very same piece.

  • Wow this is impressive! Great playing throughout, great feeling and sound.

It's a pit disappointing however that there are quite a few mistakes you did because you read the sheet music wrong... For example, at 0:08, the right hand has E naturals and not E flats like the beginning.

  • @RobinLSL I stand corrected! Thanks!

  • sounds great :D

  • Thanks for your nice comment. It was fun to learn and play this music.

  • nice! Do you know where I could get the music sheet for these wonderful etudes? Or perhaps could you email it to me? PLease reply, thx.

    Jacky

    from Malaysia~

  • The score is published by A-RAM in Russia, and by Zen-On in Japan. So, I believe they are quite widely available.

Yes, aren't these such wonderful gems?

    Thanks for listening.

  • A bit too fast on some parts

  • AWESOME! This piece is so hard, and you play it so well!

Any comments on how to NOT freeze up and tense when so much is going on? I find thats the main block between me and playing this piece. Especially the solo section after the repeat of A.

  • Kind of lost cohesion toward the end and harshly percussive on two or so of the chords, but very energetic performance.

  • Hooohaaa!!! rock!

  • Excellent! I love this piece.

  • do you know were i can find the sheet music ?

  • Great music! Kasputin have Myspace? Its wonderful píece.
