Identity crisis doesn't mean a thing to Vanessa Hidary, whose journey to her eclectically-gathered Jewish roots took her through the world of hip-hop and spoken word. A self-described "culture bandit," she does not want you to tell her that she doesn't look Jewish, because this Syrian-American Nuyorican-reppin' Jewess most certainly is Jewish. She'll even go to Harlem Def Poetry Jam to tell you personally. Mixing old-school Hebrew vibes with a multi-culti sensibility and street smarts, Vanessa's message is simple: be proud of who you are.
A production of http://www.leadel.net, a project of The European Jewish Congress (http://www.eurojewcong.org) and made possible thanks to its President Moshe Kantor.

  • I gotta look this lady up more. She is interesting.

  • @Natelcs And those awesome rappers that are Jewish.

  • @kathaiti The only rappers that don't hate Jews are mindless dumbasses like Lil Wayne. They dont know what Hip Hop is about. A large amount of rappers are members of the 5 Percent Nation. You cant deny that. I could be labeled as prejudice? For pointing out that many rappers are anti-semitic? And regardless it's horribly ironic that the vid shows her posing with Mos Def.

  • @Natelcs Once again, a few artist comments does not represent all. Life is going to be difficult for you with that kind mentality. Some might label you as being prejudice.

  • @kathaiti Generalizing a genre, yep thats really mean of me. I grew up on hip-hop. But then I realized how anti-semitic Hip-Hop was. All of it comes from black supremacist views and ideas. I could care less about being proud of your race and fighting, but it has been strongly at the expense of Jews. And these views seaped through to Hip-Hop. Chuck D, Mos Def, Nas, all have made anti-semitic comments.

  • @erinmammi Have you ever listened to Mos Def? He believes the Jews controll hip-Hop and states it in his song "Rape-Over". Chuck D accused the Jews of killing Jesus, and tis is on top of the many anti-semitic things in hip-hop. Not to mention the fact that Hip-Hop is highly influenced by Malcolm X, Farrkhan, and the Black Panther movement.

  • @Natelcs What have you been smoking??? Please stop generalizing people. You sure wouldn't want people doing that to you!

  • @Natelcs WHAT??! Last time I checked Hip Hop was made by black people who are not only a minority, but have also been through a history of abuse and hatred, Kinda like Jewish people...UMMM black people dont hate Jews, if anything they identify with them. Jews, blacks, all face discrimination...they are not the ones hating they are the ones being HATED ON!!!! Duh.

  • The irony that she is into Hip-Hop groups who more than likely hate Jewish people...
