Sportsworld - Nauru's national sport - 22 April 08

August is the is the date for the Aussie rules international cup. One of the countries involved will be Nauru which has high hopes, after all AFL is its national sport. Amazingly the worlds smallest island nation hasn't had an AFL league for almost two years after their local tournament was disbanded due to violence on and off the pitch.

Now I understand you Rock at Aussie Football but what has happened to soccer? In 1994 you beat the Melanezian cup champions the Solomon Islands and yet you gave it up, while teams like Guam and Pohnpei got theyr asses whooped and continued? What you did back then would be comparable with a new national soccer team beating Spain or Mexico! I bet that if you can make aussie rule team that makes it to a international competition, you can build a soccer team that could rival some of your neighbours

It's goo to see that the younger generation of Nauruans holding their heads up high and proud, of not only being Nauruans but also representing their country diplomatically, I'm very proud to see these young guys come through playing a tough sport such as AFL Footy.
